It can take varied amounts of time based on how good of a signal you have. A lot of them you have to pay for, but are still insecure. You have to be on a special "white list" before they will let you connect.

Just keep trying, but give it about 30 seconds before you give up.

You are trying to connect using 802.11abg WIFI, this is available at some public libraries, coffee shops, hotels, airports and more. They generally are free and open to public access but are not secure, make sure to have your security installed before connecting just like with your desk top or you will get viruses and more. Also never give /use any personal info over a non secure connection (credit card #, name, etc.)
Check and make sure your computer is WIFI capable by looking at your network connections also it should have a tag on bottom of computer showing Wifi. Look up using WiFi in help on your computer. To connect make sure in network connections they show enabled, to look click on small computer icon in task tray right lower side of screen and click on network connections, then it will show all available connections and enable the one that is for 802.11abg and then you should be able to connect, look at signal strength and click on connect if signal is good, it should only take a few seconds to connect.
Hope this helps

At your local Starbucks or the airport or where ever your trying to access a hotspot ask someone to show you how to do it.

Wifi is just as fast as Ethernet. Should come up instantly (or reasonably close to instantly). If it doesn't, something isn't right.

hotspots are places like coffee shops where they have open wireless internet access. Sometimes they are free, other times you must join it and register or sometimes you have to pay either way. I hope this helped.
