So long as its not whiney, trite and pointlessly emo, yes.

Yes! Some very famous authors have written some very depressing books. For example Angela's Ashes, by Frank McCourt, made me feel sorry for every Irishman ever born and The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, mad me simply want to leap from the highest and nearest bridge. However, that said, they were both excellent books!
So as far as your books goes. Go for it! – and happy (or sad :-) ) writing!

I've read plenty of sad books, and some of them have become all time favorite (i.e. The Lovely Bones), but generally I prefer to read things that won't make me cry. Same with movies.

Yes. I'm re-reading the Diary of Anne Frank right now. Probably the saddest book in the world.

Yes, as long as it is written well, if the writing sucks, it just sounds ridiculously corny. I love Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, it's so sad but it is so good!!! And The Bridge to Teribithia by Katherine Paterson, also sad, but good.

Sure. Marley and Me and The Lovely Bones both made me cry, although Marley and Me was actually more of a happy book. Everyone needs a good cry.

I like any book that can make me feel emotions strongly. Wether I laugh out loud or start crying that signals it is a great book because the author was able to convey those feelings to me.

for me, reading a sad book takes a great deal of effort. sometimes, i'll start it, but then i'll stop when i realize it's sad. i guess i just don't like sad stories. i'm open to them, sure. but i just start crying when it gets to the sad part.
i like humor in stories....i guess that's because i like laughing!! lol!

yes i think what matters is whether you can learn something form the book, and if the book can draw the readers attention
