They can go back as far as they want - every site that you enter or visit registers your IP address with a cookie. They can check it without getting into your computer.

The police can see a lot of your internet usage, they do have plenty of tools to do this. If your ISP (Comcast, AOL, Earthlink, Netzero, and other) keeps a log on your usage then they can see a lot of you. I'm not sure about the policies the police and your ISP have. So, if the police requests logs, your ISP can probably provide them.

Your computer logs are in your hard drive for a good while, the best way to remove the logs is by formatting your hard drive, which would suck. There are many tools out there that can permanently remove your internet logs. However if your ISP keeps logs then you still have a record.

NO. The only time the Police can investigate what is on your computer is via a criminal investigation. This question has been asked and answered before. The legislation is in place to protect internet and non internet users. It is called The Data Protection Act 1998. To find out more go to
www.dataprotection.gov.uk/
www.opsi.gov.uk/
www.privacyinternational.org/
and finally go to www.ico.gov.uk and click onto The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003.You will notice that the majority of people who answered your question do not have the slightest idea what they are talking about. This can be put at the door of hearsay. If necessary i will supply you with a Precedent [ case law]

Young man, yes with a warrant they can take your computer to their forensic lab and do with it as they wish.

Don't really want to know why you are asking this question. If you have something to hide, or have committed a crime on your pc, I would suggest that you remove your HDD, take a hammer and beat it to death. No computer forensic expert in the world can strip any data from a HDD, that has been beat to death with a hammer.

If the police suspect any thing dodgy, the can take your computer away, with a warrant if necessary. They have tech dudes who can find almost everything that has ever been downloaded, even if you delete your history and ssend things to the recycle bin and delete it there

If they confiscate your computer for any reason, forensics can gain entry to all of your stored information, for as long as you have used the computer.
