My doctor said it was perfectly fine to sleep in any position in which you are comfortable - especially earlier on. I found myself waking up on my stomach pretty regularly until I got too big. Only when you are really farther along do you even need to worry about sleeping on your back as well. I'm 38 weeks and carrying all out front like a basketball. My most comfortable position to sleep in is to lie mostly on my side but sort of on my belly...kind of like I am making a number "4" with my legs. I put a body pillow between my legs with the lower leg almost straight and the upper leg bent. My belly rests on the pillow and I "hug" the top of the pillow with my arms. It works for me! Just sleep how you are comfortable - and sleep now while you can!

You won't hurt anything by sleeping on your stomach at this point, but try to get used to sleeping on your left side. That is the preferred position for sleep while pregnant to allow optimal blood flow. You might as well get used to it now, it'll be a long 40 weeks if you aren't at all accustomed to sleeping that way.

My doctor told me to sleep however I want. When my body doesn't like it, it won't be comfortable anymore. If it's not good for me or baby, I'll wake up. That's happened a couple times when I've gone to sleep on my back. Usually I sleep exactly like you do, sleep with a pillow & then wake up flat on my belly.

I am 19 wks and 3 days and do the same thing! My ob told me that the baby will let me know when it is no longer alright! So if your comfy enough to sleep like that, then all is well. It won't be long, though, I'm afraid, till you'll have to find a new sleeping position b/c who wants to sleep on a watermelon!?

hi Ashley,
I am also 20 weeks pregnant with my 5th and I sleep on my belly too. The baby seems to be fine. If it is uncomfy then u know it is too much pressure for the baby...

As long as you feel comfortable, I guess there s nothing wrong with it. You´ll feel it straight away when there´s too much pressure on the bloodvessels inside. I can get very dizzy by that. Then it´s also not nice for your little-one because it gets less blood and therefore less oxygen.

My doctor told me not to stress over sleeping positions.....your body will know if you are sleeping wrong or if you need to move.

I sleep on my back - it's the only way I'm comfy - but all the books say that is wrong. My dr. told me that my body would instinctively change positions before something happened.

I slept mostly on my stomach all nine months. I would slant my hip inward toward the bed. I was kinda diagonal to teh bed. Not fully on my stomach and not fully on my side. My doc said that was just fine as long as I wastn straining or anything than the baby is well cushioned. If it got me ful nights rest, than he said to do it. It wont hurt anything. Good Luck!!!!

I slept on my stomach until it became uncomfortable around 22-23 weeks.

I'm 32 weeks pregnant and still sleep somewhat on my tummy. It's the only way I can sleep.
