We run a small business that teaches financial skills to children, locally. Recently we were are asked if we could come to another state to teach a module of classes. Should we pay our own travel expenses or should we ask the organization to cover them?

2 options. Either have them pay travel, or bump up your rate enough to cover them.

I work as a consultant part of the year and I always have my clients pay for travel, hotel and meals when I have to travel to them. It's always been about managing expectations. If you first discussed travelling to their location and didn't talk about expenses and then the next time you meet with them, you bring it up, could be trouble.
Always be clear right from the start. It make things easier.

Hope that helps.

It doesn't hurt to ask.

Most of the time this is a normal part of business when you have to travel to a customers site. Just keep the travel costs reasonable.

Make sure that it is clearly stated in your contract.

I think they should pay, since this is out of your usual area. The company I worked for always charged for this. Invoice it under Disbursements and make sure you keep receipts or a form that shows gas mileage. This is pretty standard, I don't think they'll object; just let them know ahead of time so they can't object after the fact.
