Is all of this possibly scratching? Watch closely and see if it appears he is scratching himself against things in the tank. If so you have some type of parasite in the tank.

Otherwise I would say it's most likely ammonia poisoning. Check or have a pet shop check your ammonia readings for you. If they are high additinal water changes will be needed until the biological filter can handle the load.

If you have holey rock in the tank take it out. Sounds about the right amount of time for some ornament to leech enough toxins to cause this. It could also come form colored rock and ceramic ornaments. Unsure of what exactly is holey rock? That swirly orange and white rock, sometimes it also looks like concrete colored with pretty holes in it. Its volcanic and will leach deadly stuff into the water.
Change all of the water and add a small handful of epsom salts.

I am guessing that he has parasites and is trying to itch his scales. I have seen this before. Get a close look at his sides and see if his scales look discolored or bloated at all. Also check for fin and tail rot. If nothing is evident then you can pick up a medicine you add to the water that encompasases a wide range of fish fungus and disease . The name eludes me but the pet store employee might be able to offer advice on a product.
Good luck

Your fish is Flashing, They will tend to dash off and stop for a couple of inches, rub themselves against the glass or gravel sometimes do a lil shimmy. Go to your local pet store and ask them for Maracyn, and tell them what your fish is doing. Maracyn should help them within a couple days.

If throwing himself against the glass is more like swimming sideways into it and along it like he's scratching his side (called "flashing"), this would be more of a parasite problem (scratching an itchy area). If this sounds like a description of what you're seeing, get a good antiparasitic medication like Clout.
