Dr. King's vision for basic civil rights for all people centered around the southern U.S. because he was from this region and it was here that racism had the most wide-spread, devastating impact (from lynchings and church bombings to segregationist policies throughout the region). But, it was his intention that we as a nation examine our attitudes that promoted racism in all of its forms, overt and systemic, throughout the nation. It may also interest you to know that at the time of his death Dr. King was preparing to publicly address his opposition to America's involvement in the war in Vietnam. This effort was eclipsed by his more well-known civil rights efforts, and was cut short by his untimely death, but at the core of his movement was his dedication to principles of non-violence. He was opposed to violence in all forms; social and governmental.
