Rebbew is absolutely right. I have watched the show three times now, and very carefully the ending.
There is absolutely nothing in the last few minutes that even remotely suggests Tony got killed. Nicky Leotardo was not in the final scene, he was in there earlier. The man in the Members Only jacket was closing the door to the restroom just before you hear the door chime when Meadow (or somebody else) comes in. All it was is the last dinner as a family (or one of the last) before Meadow marries Parisi's kid and leaves the nest.
Chase must think we are all nuts for this rampant speculation. There's no hitman in the bar, nothing. The Man in Cafe is fixing his coffee and not even facing the Sopranos, and the two black guys are looking for a seat. If anybody was watching, Tony killed off those two black guys in Season II who tried to kill him.
Tony's last dinner with his entire family before his darling daughter becomes somebody else's wife. He doesn't want to "stop believing" that Meadow is no longer his little girl anymore (even though the entire series she really wasn't). The Sopranos go on, but we are no longer part of their lives.
No movies. Both Chase and Gandolfini wanted out of the Sopranos a long time ago.

You, the viewer, got whacked. When talking about death, one of the characters said that you don't feel anything....it just goes black and you hear nothing. You, the nervous viewer is watching Tony when unexpectedly, you get whacked from behind....and that is it. The family, Tony, and their life goes on but you are no longer a part of it.

It didn't "fade" to black... it CUT to black and that is what shook people up... a fade to black would have indicated an intention to end the program.

My take on it is that life is completely unpredictable. In the seconds after the blackout he could get whacked, or his assasins could get whacked, or nothing at all could happen - just like anybody else - the way life works - unpredictable.

They did it that way so they could make "movies" later for hbo or whomever will pay the bucks.
People were expecting the family to get whacked so why not do the opposite lol.
