Texas first became an independent republic. In 1836 Texas won its independence from Mexico in a war, the key battle of which was the Battle of San Jacinto, in which Mexican leader Santa Ana was captured and forced to sign a peace treaty that essentially gave Texas its independence.

So Texas was its own country - but because many American settlers of Texas wanted Texas to be part of the U.S. (largely so their debts from the war with Mexico could be paid off), they petitioned the U.S. government for admission to the Union. That petition was put off by Congress for several years because of the slavery question; Texas permitted slavery and northerners did not want to admit another slave state into the Union. Finally, in 1845, Texas's application for annexation was approved by Congress and signed by President Tyler. By the end of 1845, the Republic of Texas had ceased to exist, and Texas joined the United States as a state.
