I'm thinking of launching an on-site tech support biz with advertising. Before I do, I need insight from you about what percentage of the time that I'd be getting in my car, fighting traffic, and entering a tech support situation that is either going to cost me more in time/hassle than it's worth or where I just can't help them (700MHz HP with failing PSU, win98, and spyware).
My initial analysis is that it'll be one in seven situations.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Your average computer user is using Windows....which is prone to problems...(as you already know if you are planning on getting into tech support)

Your Average user is also using Internet Explorer....which as you already know is one of the biggest security loopholes in Windows....

With that in mind...i think that 1 in 7 is being generous....i would go more with 1-15 or more...

It all depend on how good you are, if you are experienced with all the OS and the main stream of applications, you can normally tell what the problems are before you need to set off.

I sometime do main stream support in my company and I can, most of the time work out what they need before the end of the call, if after that it doesnt work or fix it, provide they have internet connection, we dial into their PC, very rarely that I have to go onsite unless its a hardware problem or they have no connection.

One thing you do need to make clear is the charges, no one likes to guess, even if you havent a clue how much/how long, explain to them beforehand to save confusions and bad feeling.
