Just to supplement what has been supplied.

A missionary's prime purpose is to evangelise.

The gospel has to be told and shown. If you look in the first verse of the Acts of the Apsotles, which is like a Missionaries hand book, you will find it says 'all that Jesus did and taught'

Three things are expected of an evangalist, uprightness of living, intimacy with God, and being able to connect with people. Such a one is also likely to study and to equip himself for work as missionary, and be sent out where ever, God directs the church to send him.

An evangelist makes a challenge. He challenges the sinner to face God. As most people's god is self then self is portrayed condemmed on a cross, but the purpose is not condemnation, but cleansing. Actually it is even better than that it is complete renewal. But there cannot be any 'rebirth' until there has been a recognition of 'death'

An evanglist is not merely following a creed, but is one appointed by God, so that light of the love of God may flood the souls of men, and women and children without regard to race or creed or age or social standing, or any other factor that divides people.

An evangelist is not necessarily an apologetic, though he probably will be familiar with the finer points of Christian theology, but his prime purpose is not to argue the case for Christianity, but to point people towards Jesus the Christ.

The work of an evangalist has never been limited to mere men nor to career christians but by whomever, the Holy Spirit has chosen to work.

The two terms are related but there are differences.
First, the similarities. Evangelism (from Gk.euangelion) is the activity of preaching the evangel or gospel (lit. good news about Jesus Christ, i.e. He is God incarnate and has come to redeem us from our sins). In the beginning it consisted of the preaching of the kerygma or 'the message'. So as you can see, the term goes back to the Bible is not a modern innovation. Nowadays, it is associated with 'Bible thumping', when preachers (called evangelists) go around churches or public halls hired for the purpose, preaching and appealing for people to be converted. Billy Graham was one good example in the 60s, and 70s. Today many use TV stations. There is also a form of person-to-person evangelism called 'personal evangelism' practised by groups such as Campus Crusade.
Missionaries are usually people sent from churches to another place to live with a group of people in order to bear Christian witness among them. This may often involve evangelism and direct preaching, but sometimes it may not. During the Victorian period missionaries were more involved in preaching but today many missionaries work in secular fields such as medicine, education, agriculture, water engineering, etc. to help their communities. They may or may not be evangelists.
Hope that helps.

No, missionaries are people who devote their life to helping others who are outside of their belief system.

Evangelists are people who devote their life to spreading the word of God to other people.

The difference is not huge.
