Sometimes there is a really large span of time between when the water breaks and when the mother reaches 10 centimeters. When that occurrs the doctor makes the decision to do a C- section in order to prevent infection. Once the water breaks, things aren't as safe for baby and mommy.

Well, some mothers elect to have a C-section, because they do not want to go through the pain of childbirth and or they want to schedule things. It is a little selfish, but to each her own. Sometimes doctors recommend elective C-sections, if the first chid(ren) was C-section, becuase complications can arise from the first C-section.

Other reasons may be: Breech baby, baby is too big, the cord is wrapped around baby's neck.

If one or both the mom or that baby is at risk of losing their lives like if the umbilical is tangled around the baby's neck. If the mother has been in labor too long than they would have to get an emergency c-section because after the water breaks they are only supposed to stay in for so long then it becomes dangerous. Another reason might be that they had a c-section their first labor so they generally have to have a c-section their next labor also. There are more reasons but I can't think of anymore right now.

For the most part anymore, ceasarean sections are done out of convenience for Doc AND mom...but sometimes, it is necessary to get baby out ASAP... a breech presentation deosn't always mean a c-section, but a baby that won't fit thru mom's pelvic girdle does... also if baby is having trouble (heart rate that drops when mom is pushing, or heart's beating too fast...) then baby needs to come out! By the way, Doc's would MUCH RATHER put mom on a Pitocin drip and have her labor away until she's ready to deliver that to ever have to pick up a scalpel!

Some docs wont deliver vaginally after a c-section. So theres one - a previous c-section.

There are also non-medical reasons, called elective c-sections, which there is debate over, since hospitals make more money off these, but are not medically necessary and clog the op rooms for those who may need them.

If your doctor knows it would be too hard on your body or it could cause to much stress to your heart the doctor will most likely do a c-section also if you have problems with dilation or your body is to small to push out a baby.

If the baby isn't breathing. This can happen for a few reasons, but it's mainly because the cord is wrapped around the neck.

some women that are overweight have harder time with the pushing and everything so they have to have c-sections, and sometimes if you have diabetes, you might have to have one because of the strain and blood sugar might go way down after giving natural birth... other then that that's all i heard...
recently though women would rather have c-sections...weird.

My younger son had his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck three times. When I had contractions, it made his heart rate plummet, so I had to have a c-section.
