It's as safe as any other place in the world. Since you'll be alone on foreign soil you'll have to keep a few things in mind. Dress appropriately, foreigners tend to wear the skimpiest of clothes, this attracts a lot of attention. Do not mingle with strangers, meeting up with online friends is also not a good idea. You don't know their credentials. Remember bad folks are present in all socities you have to watch out for yourself.

Online friendships can be deceptive. I would leave these online friends alone. If you have misgivings about travelling alone then you are perhaps not yet ready for it. Instead of trying a brand new country far away why dont you try one nearer home and closer to your own culture to see how you fare. Then venture out to distant lands and cultures different from your own. It might be a good idea to go places with a friend first before striking out by yourself. Its greater safety and more fun.

India is a very safe place to travel, and Bangalore is a very cosmopolitan place, just practice the safety precautions you would at home, and as one or two replies have told you, i would be careful who you met, when the only contact was on line. play safe, meet in crowded place and never get yourself into a situation you can't escape from

yes it is safe and indians respect tourists... :) rapes happen everywhere in the world not only in india, but the recent delhi's incident has gained whole world's attention because it has happened in such a way that no woman in the world's history has been raped and killed so cruelly.... apart from this incident, india is safe for tourists... but travelling alone is not safe anywhere... especially during the night time... you always have to have someone with you, or atleast a guide.... have a happy trip and enjoy india :)

Bangalore is safe.

Your "few online friends" are the potential threat to your safety, not the city and the country.

It will be absolutely safe for day time travel. You should avoid travelling alone in the night.

Generally it is safe and friendly place.
But do not count on 'online' friends !
Wear dresses that go with Indian culture- safe bet would be full shirt/trouser , salwar-kameez etc.
Avoid night travel.
