Not possible, just flat out not even remotely possible. Laptops are much less powerful than desktops, reason being they run on batteries. Hence you have to buy a very expensive laptop to get equal performance to a good gaming desktop. To play new games, you would probably need to spend an absolute minimum of $1500 on a laptop, and that would only give you average graphics in the games. The type of budget you are talking about for a gaming laptop is not possible.

Very sorry to break it to you, but you will only get a bottom-end of the market laptop for 500-600 bucks.
A sturdy laptop that's a good beginner and nice-ish to play basic games on is the Dell Inspiron 1501
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DNCWHA1&s=dhs
Or you could look at the Compaqs, on the Hp site:
www.hp.com
Now onto the smart thing to do:
GET A DESKTOP,
These will own a laptop at anything but portability, (laptops may look cool but desktops are faster) You can get a very decent gaming desktop for under 600 bucks
Check dells website and Hps,
STAY away from acers,
and just a few pointers,
RAM should be at least 1gb (the higher the better)
Processor should be pentium 4, Pentium D, or core 2 duo (from worst to best)
Or AMD Athlon 4000+ or higher
graphics card should have 256mb. Dont bother comparing ATI vs Nvidia just get whats best for you,
Hope you choose wisely

If you're a big gamer you wouldn't want a laptop anyway. Desktops are far more powerful, expandable, and affordable.
Alienware is the de facto manufacturer of high-performance gaming PCs. Their mid-range notebook is over $1500, top of the line over $4000. Look at Dell XPS or higher end HP notebooks, they might be a little nicer on the wallet.
I can't imagine being a big gamer on such a small keyboard and monitor, but...
