GeekSquad installed XP on this machine, which originally shipped with Vista... My friend needs XP, but wants to connect to broadband over ethernet!

realtek uses a unified driver for their entire network chip family. try this link "ftp://209.216.61.149/cn/nic/RTL8169_8139_810x_663_0705.zip"
(without the quotes)
unzip it someplace like c:\realtek and go to the hardware control panel and update the driver. point the update wizard at that folder. it SHOULD work.

This system never shipped with XP so inorder to find the drivers for the NIC you would need to know what make and model NIC you are using.

Try www.hp.com, try typing "HP Pavilion a1700n" in the "search" and you should find all the resources you need.
