Income taxes are also pretty small in Texas. In fact, they are zero. That might make a bit of difference in wages.

Also, where are you comparing these wages to. If you are comparing them to Los Angeles or New York, then yes, parts of Texas will have lower wages. They also have a much lower cost of living.

If you have a college education in Texas wages are supposedly really high from what a friend from Texas has told me on numerous occasions.

Have you ever driven across Texas? On Interstate 10, it is around a 1000 miles from New Mexico to Louisiana.

For many years Texas was the biggest state. Then Alaska came in to make it number 2 by almost half. Problem is few people have ever traveled across Alaska so there isn't a frame of reference. Traveling across the US most people will drive through part of Texas.their most often repeated phrase about the experience, "I didn't think we would ever get out of Texas".
I grew up in Texas and an glad I did get out.

It's a saying that's been with Texas for what seems like forever. It's the same thing as Missouri being the "Show Me" state. I don't think those people want to be known as a group that has to have everything proven to them before they believe it. The phrase has just "always been."
