Just a quick correction of the answer a few above this - Bob Marley's band was called Bob Marley and the Wailers, not Whalers. As in, they wailed on guitar or wailed to the heavens, not hunted enormous marine animals for blubber.

Also, Burning Spear is considered a pioneer of Reggae, but I think he came along after Bob Marley.

The Rude boys and girls that emerged during the hand-over of Jamaica in 1954 used to listen to what local producers found within their community. They loved music from other places and put their own twist to it. They had speakers that were mobile and had parties. Not a lot of people know this. They have 'rude boy' on their car and have no idea where it comes from.
Ska is Reggae double-time. That's what they listened to. The kids and men would play their solicited and unsolicited material to local producers in Kingston Town. A lot of people were ripped off. Bob Marley was ripped off by several people before he was picked up by a British producer.
Peter Tosh (Steppin Razor) was one of his guitarists who went on his own later.
I have tons of info on this. I love that music.
