I've been teaching mathematics for 21 years, so of course I use it to do my job. It is also important in helping me solve problems, to reason and think, to notice patterns, make predictions and work with money.

Almost everything is characterized by numbers (how many people, how many potatoes, how many traffic lights, how many pairs of shoes, etc.). So counting is important to relate to the things around you.

All objective measurements are quantified numerically (how many pounds, how many miles, how many miles per hour, how many minutes, how many gallons, etc.). So math is critical for measuring and understanding our surroundings.

All ratios and other comparisons of numbers are based on arithmetic (how much bigger is one thing than another, what is a batter's batting average (hits divided by at-bats), what is the probability of rolling a seven (number of sevens rolled divided by total rolls), how much does your auto insurance cost per day (cost of policy divided by number of days that the policy provides insurance coverage), how much change should the customer receive (amount given by the customer, minus amount of purchase), etc.). So arithmetic is important for converting information we have into information we need or would like to have.

Some situations are more complicated and require higher level math (calculating how much interest you will earn on your savings account in the next three years, calculating the heat loss in a house to determine the size of furnace required, determining the speed for maximum gas mileage, etc.) Even if you don't have to do a lot of these calculations, it is important to have a general understanding of how they are done in order to know whether things you hear or read are reasonable.

Math really is everywhere.

I'm a math major, so I use it everyday! But even before that I was an engineer, and there were many uses of it, especially trig, to calculate the forces on machine parts so we could predict failure. I even solved an 80-year old problem regarding the machines, using math, and our customers found it very useful, and I got a nice raise!

Many life stages and skills require a solid grasp of mathematics, from entering university to balancing a household budget, applying for a home loan, or assessing a possible business opportunity.

Mathematics is not as important as life and death - it's far more important than that, for it is the language used to describe all of God's creation.

Without mathematics, we couldn't design the tools that provide mankind with energy and food. We would all starve to death in the cold and the dark - and then we'd end up in Hell.

Do your homework, or else!

I use it everyday in both my professional and personal life. I work in marketing for a retail company and use statistical analysis daily to predict market behavior and to determine business trends. If you are interested in a career in business, mathmatics (especially statistics) are essential.
In my personal life, I am constantly using simple algebra. For example, I count my daily food intake and try to determine if I am reaching my nutrition goals. I am constantly trying to solve for x, because different sources lable things in different units, sometimes as a quantity, sometimes as a percent. We also use quite a bit of simple geometry in our yard, mostly for gardening purposes. Those old problems about determining the height of a tree by measuring its shadow has come in handy!
