My boyfriend is a baseball umpire and according to the official baseball rule under section 7.04(b) the batter is out and each runner other than the batter may without liability to be put out advance one base. when a fielder after catching a fly ball falls into a stand or falls across ropes into a crowd when spectators are on the field or falls into any other dead ball areas like the dugout

Provided the catch is not the third out of the inning the runners would be awarded score-third and bring up the next batter. Two base award from time of throw for throw that goes into a dead ball area.

WAIT - I reread the question -- one base award (I thought he flipped the ball into the stands not himself) It would be a third-second award. But the runners are still responsible for tagging up legally or may be called out on appeal.

This is not a hard rule to follow it would be an infield fly going into effect if it doesn't make it out of the infield. He caught the ball in fair terrority his momentum into foul territory. The runners wouldn't go anywhere.

Any catch made in fair or foul territory is an out. The runners can tag and try to advance a base if they choose to do so.

This is called an out and if the runners didnt tag up and they were tagged out at another base then they would be out. The ball in the air is not really foul until it hits the ground in foul territory.

this is called the "catch and carry rule" where a player makes a catch in play but his momentum takes him out of play

as the first answer said, the batter is out because the ball was caught, but the runners each get one base because the ball was carried out of play.

However, there is an exception to this rule, if the player imediattly returns to the field of play with the ball still in his possesion, the ball is considered to have never been out of play and the runners may only advance at the risk of being thrown out.

first off how many outs??? if there are two outs when the ball is hit then the batter is out and the inning is over. if there are less than 2 outs before the ball is hit, then the batter is out and the runners have to return to their respective bases and advance if they so choose.

It is a fair ball, the batter is out, and if there are less than two outs the runners can tag and advance.

It's a new rule this year that all runners are given the next base if the fielder goes into the stands
