Naw... white would get dirty too fast. They probably wore the same color as the bad guys. It's just easier to tell them apart in movies if you color code them.

Only in the movies . Some of the greatest heros of the old west wore black at times . It just depended on what they felt like wearing that day .

by good guys, I assume you mean gunfighter type heroes
they wore a variety of colors including white.
many were rather stylish in their clothing choice.

white hats and outfits came about in early movie westerns because of the problems of lighting on a dark interior set. white was just more visable.

They wore whatever was sturdy & strong for long days in the saddle or behind a mule & plow!
White didn't become an issue until TV Cowboys came along.

Not after Labor Day! Seriously - they wore what they had available. White probably made you an easier target and was harder to keep clean, so I doubt it.
