Unix is an operating system. The syntax used for all of the commands are different than Windows, (Mac OS is now a UNIX operating system). So, learning how to use Unix can feel like you are learning a programming language, but its not, its an Operating system.

It's an operating system. This is the thing that runs the computer - tells it how to access the disk, load programs, and so on.

There are lots of programming languages that come with a default Unix/Linux system, including C/C++, Python, and Perl - but these are all extras, they're not part of the Unix system itself.
