My betta gets his bowl pretty dirty, and if I don't clean it every week like I should, it gets a ring. I've tried cleaning it with warm water and a paper towel, but to no avail. Are there any ways to clean that ring away that will not harm my fish? I know that any chemicals will surely kill him. [[ps, I have had my fish, Gilbert, for almost three years so I try to be very careful with him because I adore him]]

One word - vinegar. Full strength scrubbed straight on the ring or in water up to the line. Let it soak for awhile, then scrub. Rinse well with water after scrubbing.
Obviously without the fish in the bowl. Gilbert will need to go the the day spa for fish or something. He'll appreciate his nice, clean home when he returns.

There's not an easy way to do this without hurting the fish! I bought some 'Safe and Easy' cleaner from Petsmart. It comes in a spray, and in a pack of pre-moistened wipes. This works GOOD, but not Great. Since the white buildup is Lime, you might want to go to the hardware store, and buy a box cutter, not the angled one where the blade is triangular, but the FLAT blade one. Use judgement as to using the cleaner I mentioned, or the aquarium water and wet the lime buildup. Then in small areas, scrape it off with the blade in single, forward motions, not back and forth. If this gets it off, then do this about once a month to maintain it. Good Luck! steve

Move Gilbert to another clean container, (a pitcher, bowl, or pot), using the same water. Empty his fishbowl and rinse it out. Make a paste using baking soda and water. Rub the stain with it, it should be wiped thouroughly clean and then rinsed and dried before replacing Gilbert and his water back into his fishbowl.

Usually the ring will come off with hot water and scrubbing with salt. If that doesn't do it you can scrub it with vinegar. Sometimes part of the ring is from etching in the glass caused by the chemicals that make the ring. If thaat's the case nothing will get that off.
