I had six clown loaches in my tank for over a year. They are approx six inches. Everything I have read tells me that clown loaches are next to impossible to breed in captivity, especially if they are only small like mine.

However, I went away for a little while and left my brother with strict instructions on how to care for my tank (ie, water changes, feeding, testing water quality etc). He did an excellent job by the way.

When I got back, the first thing I did was clean some extra weed out of my tank, then feed them.

Lo and behold, SEVEN loaches swam up to get the food.

Yes SEVEN!

The extra loach is very small, only an inch long compared to the others.

Where did he come from? Is it possible that my loaches spontaneously bred? Or should I suspect my brother of playing tricks on me?

Loaches lay their eggs on the glass or underneath the leaves of vegetation, real or plastic. Chances are they bred. If the Seven Loaches you saw are the size of baby guppies, then they bred. If they are full grown, then your brother may have replaced yours or added to them. Feed the new babies some canned spinach, just a small amount as to not pollute the water, take a small pinch out of the can and smash it with your fingers. Put your finger in the water and let the little bits of spinach fall or float to the bottom of the tank. You can do this with green beans, and boiled carrots also.
Enjoy them! steve

My maximum suitable guess is that your clown loach jumped out. Jumpers can each each now and then be very no longer basic to discover on the floor. while they hit the floor, they could flop their thank you to a pair place you does no longer think of to seem. i've got each each now and then come for the duration of mummified fish in some corner of the floor, months while they could have jumped. in line with danger this says something undesirable approximately my housework, yet my factor is that that's no longer basic to discover those suicidal fish while they have lept.

I am thinking your brother went out and bought another loach. If your loaches had bred there would likely be more than one left and, also, it takes weeks for fry to hatch and grow to one inch in length. Were you gone long enough for a fish egg to hatch and the baby to grow?

You obviously have two possibilities:

1 is that you are one of only two people in history to reportedly breed clown loaches in captivity

2 is that a clown loach was added to your tank

I would definitly interogate the brother. Only 1 fry? Seems tricky to me. Maybe look around and see if you can find other fry maybe hiding away in the plants. Do some investigating.

I would suspect a trick if there was only one and it were that large. There should have been more to make it if they had spawned.
