who says they can't??
I know people who have got down to it the day they were out of hospital.
I'm afraid I'm not one of them - after my births, i was too sore and knackered to be up for it - plus, it would have been like hubbie poking a sausage into a railway tunnel :-D

Depends on the kind of birth, but if you gave birth vaginally, you may have had an episiotomy or some tearing, so it would be impossibly painful to have sex (not to mention the risk of infection from semen into the open cervix!!) If you have a cesearean (I didn't, but I can only imagine) it would be painful as it is major abdominal surgery, and there is an intensive recovery time for that. The last thing on your mind after your baby is born is sex, believe me. The waiting time is generally 6-8 weeks as your OB/GYN will schedule an appointment at that time to make sure all is well before giving you the okay on sex.

They suggest you wait 6 weeks so that your body has time to heal from giving birth. Most women don't wanna have sex right away anyway.

Trust me, after you've given birth to your baby, the LAST thing on your mind is sex. My OB advised us to wait at least 6 weeks before even trying to let my body heal and to make sure nothing went wrong w/ my stitches(had an episiotomy). You don't want an infection, and even after 6 weeks it's still pretty uncomfortable to have sex.

My first thought is are you speaking about yourself? IF so are you horny or what?! You need to wait so your body can heal, a woman bleeds for 3-7 weeks after giving birth. Imagine trying to squeeze something the size of a watermelon out of a hole the size of a lemon! Believe me sex is the furthest thing on most women's mind after having a baby.

everything has to heal you just put your body through 9 months of growth and hours of delivery trauma. If you are not fully healed it may hurt, plus if the cervex is not fully closed you can introduce bacteria into the uterus and cause a septic infection, which is VERY BAD!!! That, and most women do not think they ned protection right after birth and you do! You'd be surprised how many women go to a 6 week check-up and find they are pregnant again.

During labor your body goes through a very exhausting process. Therefore, your body needs time to heal. Also, your cervix needs to go back to normal in order to block out bacteria and prevent infection to your uterus. And, honestly, the last thing you want to do right after giving birth is have sex.

6 weeks is just a general rule. I was fine after 4 weeks, but I had really easy labors. I know some woman who waited three months or longer, especially after a C-section.

Everything has to have time to heal it can cause serious problems if some one don't wait. I heard of one case that a lady though she was ready and three days later had to rushed to the hospital because it caused an infection then it had spread.

The risk of infection.
Even in a delivery where there was no tearing the cervix still needs time to heal and close. If semen go there it creates a bacterial environment where infection can grow.

If it's a vaginal birth, your vagina has been stretched out considerably and will be sore (especially so if you had an episiotomy or you tore and needed stitches. If you had a c-section, your abdomen will be very sore and tender and sex will be incredibly painful.
