Palm Springs isn't by the ocean. Maybe you'd like san diego, or higher up the coast like ventura county, or santa barbara.
EDIT: San Francisco is my favorite city in CA, but if you're thinking of actually going to the beach and sitting in sunshine, it won't be the place for you. Santa Cruz is probably the closest place you'd like.

Many parts of California are so diverse that a single answer is hard. Once you have lived by the ocean you will never be able not to. If you are interested in Southern CA check into Santa Barbara or Huntington Beach area. Be prepared for sticker shock.
You may also want to consider Santa Cruz or San Francisco, all uniquely different.

Well, are you concerned with cost of living? Anywhere near the ocean is going to be pricey. I live in San Diego about 15 mintues from the beach. You definitely want to stay away from LA. Palm Springs is about 2 hrs from the beach and it gets really hot there in the desert.

You can come to sunny san diego. There is water every where out here. LA has too much tarffic and polution. Palm springs is like the desert for vacations only, in my opinion..

Palm Springs is in the desert, and nowhere near the ocean.
Anyway, wherever you are now, stay there. We have 36 Million people here in CA, and that's plenty.

That's funny -- I just decided the same thing myself over the weekend.
LA is awful. Don't go there.
Consider San Diego and San Francisco if you want the ocean and something that's "nice." SD is a bit smaller but utterly beautiful, very laid back, not as "trendy" but extremely pretty and quite fun.

i live in sacramento, and i think it is perfect. it is not as crowded as L.A. and you can still go to the beach, you just have to drive a couple hours. there are also lakes and rivers. there is snow a couple hours up north. hot in the summer, cold in the winter... you would like it.
