I want to know more than just for traveling purposes.

The auto was invented because people wanted an alternative to the horse as a means of traveling. During the golden age of invention, the late 19th century, people were combining technology in new ways to solve age-old problems of reliability. The auto was one of those solutions.

The engine replaced the horse as a means of propulsion on carriages and the auto was born!!

They had a buggies and what not that moved people and goods around, with the birth of the steam engine and gasoline engine it's only natural to have a horse less buggie. In the end though it is because of traveling, both moving people and goods from point a to b in a faster manner than a horse would

Like all other inventions... To make life easier. I dont know about you but I would rather drive than travel by horse and buggy at slow speeds and have to feed and water the animal every few miles.
