After the suppresion of the Knights Templar, the Hospitallers were the principal Christian Order of Knights. They got a lot of the Templars wealth and property, and some say, many of their secrets as well. They are closely associated with the Island of Malta and the Knights of Malta.

Yeah they were established during the fourth (?) Crusade as a set of knights that ran a hospital (hence, hospitallier) for Christian pilgrims and crusaders to Jerusalem. They also defended strategic areas of crusader territory. They later became more militaristic.

They were important because they representated a fundamental shift in how ordinary people were medically treated- their hospitals were open to all and they often provided free care- unheard of previously. They were also of strategic importance in the Christian military forces of the period.

They defended the island of Malta. They looked after sick pilgrims but later became a military order. They were also closely connected with the crusades.
