Guys,

Help me understand something that is probably basic to you soccerheads.

Of what importance is the Concacaf Gold Cup to the World Cup Qualifiers?

In other words, how does winning the Concacaf Gold Cup benefit a team when it comes to the World Cup Qualifiers- or does it at all?

Thanks.

It has no connection just like winning Euro '08 will have no significance to the 2010 World Cup Qualification for that team.

What each of those teams does win is a trip to the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa. Which is an 8 team tournament for the 6 regional champions, the next world cup host and the last world cup winner. This is a nice tune-up for teams for 2010.

No relation at all to the World Cup. This is just the Confederation's tournament ala Euro Cup and Copa America. The winner of this tournament would represent CONCACAF in the FIFA Confederation's Cup 2009 in South Africa. Winning the Gold Cup is just to add silverware (or in this case Goldware) to the countries' trophy case and to get some bragging rights as the best team/country in the CONCACAF.

no not really except that the teams who go on to the second round of the gold cup are the strongest teams in CONCACAf and that would mean that the other teams can check how the other teams are playing so that they could be ready when the qualifiers come around. the winners of the Gold Cup will represent the CONCACAF in the 2009 Confederations cup in south africa

It is of no importance at all to the World Cup Qualifiers. It is probably the best known tournament within CONCACAF which provides good exposure to the other teams from the region but provides no points towards World Cup qualification.

its just helps the teams. they get to play together. but really when its comes to the world cup, most the teams in the concacaf gold cup are not even going to make it to the world cup.the copa America is much better and teams get a better level of soccer. they get more experience in the copa America. winning the concacaf gold cup doesn't really benefit the team . Mexico has won it many times and they still havent gotten that far in recent world cups.

The Confederations, by far. The Gold Cup, I am sorry to say, is a mediocre tournament. The only worthy title contenders are US and Mexico, perhaps Canada. Just look at the matches you get during the tournaments. For say, what's a Costa Rica vs Grenada game have on a Spain vs USA game? No, Mexico will not be in the next Confed. That's decided until the 2011 Gold Cup. Next Confed Cup is in 2013.
