Sometimes I buy something I turn out not to like because I didn't read the package carefully enough, but usually I don't fall into that trap anymore. Did when I was younger, and I'd chalk it up 50/50 to advertising and peer pressure.
As to things I don't NEED, that's another story. I'm rather a hedonist, self-indulgent, and lately you might even go so far as to call it an addiction, but as long as Border's keeps giving me 20% to 30% off "one item" coupons, I'm buying all those cool DVD boxed sets I've wanted for so long.
My DVD collection is getting somewhat out of hand, though. I haven't counted them lately, but there's probably at least 200, possibly as many as 300.

If it has HISTORICAL INTEREST either to myself or my husband. We occationally pick up an antique and re-sell it. (MONEY)
LUXURY would be another reason. I love scented linen water, essential oils to use when I soak my feet, things that are destressers for me.
I also don't need the extras for my Italian meals but I enjoy the whole experience so much I spend the extra money.
Good wine, fresh ingredience, fresh pasta, the best olive oil, and fresh bread. I even went so far as to have special serving dishes just for those meals.
Wow, now I am hungry..lol.
( Don't get me wrong, I still serve up fish sticks when in a hurry) : D
Edit: I just read Enki's entry, ROTFL!

I think I buy most things that I don't really need either because I like the display in a store and it looks so nice...
Or I have seen the product advertised on TV and it looks like I might could use it...
For some reason it always looks better in the store...
Unfortunately for me, my background is in advertising and I think that has a lot to do with my choices...

For me, I debate it and debate it and debate it until finally I tell myself 'you only live once' and buy it.
But that happens very rarely. Usually I have a good amount of self control.
