A network solid is an infinite arrangement of atoms interconnected with one another in three dimensions, as opposed to long, one-dimensional chains. An example is silicon dioxide (quartz, sand) in which every Si is connected to four O's and every O is connected to two Si's. Another is diamond, in which every C isconnected to four other C's, ad infinitum.
