Its actually automatically copyrighted if you put the (C) and year next to the work. However, you should register it with the federal government so you can prove when you copyrighted the document.

Copyright protection happens as soon as you put your idea in writing.

The usual way to deal with it is put your script in an envelope and send it yourself recorded delivery. When it arrives don't open it. This timestamps your work, so that you can prove the date you wrote it and that you were the original author.
