The best team in the world at any given time is the one on top of the IRB world rankings. At the moment, this is NZ & I'll have to admit they are a long way ahead of the opposition. Then again, they were in a similar position heading into the last World Cup in 2003 (and 99, 95, 91 lol)
World Champions at the moment are England, but in reality they are a pile of sh1te!!!
As far as World Cups are concerned, Australia is the only team to have won it twice (NZ, Sth Africa & England have won it once each).
Last time NZ won was 20 years ago!!!! CCCHOKERS!!! lol nice one Glen F!!!

The current world cup champs are England, but I would say it will be between The Springboks (South Afrika) & the All Blacks that will take over the reign from the English this year with the world cup.
Allthough the All Blacks are a very strong & physical team, the Boks are the only only team that can match up to them.
My heart lies with the Springboks & the Tri-Nations will be a taste tester for the world cup a bit later this year.

Ok the general consensus is the All Blacks and yes being a kiwi I back them too BUT those South Africans are coming onto the world stage now and will give Graham Henry and the boys a bit of a run for their money.
Go the AB's!!!

New Zealand All Blacks.
BTW kisback03, other teams in other sports have equally impressive records, USA mens basketball for one. Their record - Olympics 114-5, FIBA World Championships 105-27 (that's just over 85%). But yeah, the All Blacks are hard to beat.

The All Blacks have the best past performance, but lets examine that.
In the recent 7's tournament N Z came from behind to edge Fiji in total points, with little Samoa {population 175,000} not far behind.
N Z actively recruits Pacific Islanders away from their home islands, where-as Samoa & Fiji were all native born sons.
Go 7's, much more exciting!

Just because they are my team.
With the World Cup coming up in France, NZ and South Africa are looking strong. SA teams were in the Super 14 final with the Bulls beating the Sharks.

in words of international communities then perchance you're acceptable with Lithuania in the journey that your in ordinary words criteria is the present prevailing streak. when you're judging on and win /loss ratio over the completed heritage of the game then i imagine the ABs take the prize. inspite of the indisputable fact that when you're searching for consistancy on the utmost factor by ability of the years then perchance Canterbury might want to connect the ABs as contenders.
