I'd recommend going through winamp radio or some other form of shoutcast and start from there, some pieces from one artist can vary so I cant rely on a release to be of the same theme. Sometimes the whole album is great, others are like a one hit wonder. When you hear one you like, write it down. At least thats how I made my collection.

Sign up at garagemusic.com-- it is FREE. Then you can download free cuts and some CDs from many different bands in the jazz section. The site includes a lot of different genre's but I know the jazz stuff is really good. I've made several lists of my favorites and listen to them regularly along with my store-bought stuff from better-known artists. All musicians have to start somewhere and the "garage" is one of the best places to start!

As a jazz guitarist, I would recommend Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessell. For sax, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, for Keys, Monk or Oscar Peterson, and for trumpet, Miles Davis.

"Bli-blip" by the New York Voices. So fun, and the first female soloist is brilliant.
