Why do people hang them from the rear-view mirrors in their cars? As I understand it, the dream-catcher is supposed to only let the good dreams throughand trap the bad ones. How much sleeping and dreaming do you do while driving?

Actually the Dream Catcher is used to trap evil or bad influences regardless of whether the person is asleep or awake. It is believed that the evil is too larged to pass through the web strands so thus they become 'stuck', while the good passes because it can be very tiny (the smallest thing can make a person happy). A true Dream Catcher should have a bead (which represents the spider) somewhere in the web. The spider 'eats' the bad or evil that gets trapped in the web thus getting rid it.

✞ Perhaps because of misunderstand. I am Native American Cheyenne tribe..many believe that the dream catchers are for evil spirits which is not the case at all...The traditional dream catcher was intended to protect the sleeping individual from negative dreams, while letting positive dreams through. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them.

You brought up a good point. Maybe some people hang dream-catchers in their cars so they can be protected while they sleep during their lunch breaks. LOL I guess its just for decoration. Or maybe it is used to protect the car from having bad dreams. LOL

More for decoration, than anything, I think. But at the heart of it, a dream catcher is a protective amulet, and perhaps a driver is hoping it will confer protection from negative energies in waking life as well.....

Dreams do not necessarily refer only to the dreams that occur in sleep. Much like the australian aboriginal dreamtime there is a dreamworld (spiritworld) that is around us at all times.

perhaps for the same reason some use Crosses, Rosaries, Baby Shoes, Guardian Angels, Graduation Tassels, Dice etc.

the person hanging these may believe they will bring good luck or protection.

I wonder this too. Do people sleep in their cars?? I don't think those who put these on their mirrors really know what it is for. They just think it look pretty, so they put it on their mirrors.
