as in wave your hands/ fingers when you are excited, anxious etc. It's a common trait in people with autism, and now I work in a school for autistic children I've noticed I do it too!

I'm really looking for the prevelance of 'flapping' in non-autistic people- so for this reason I felt polls and surveys was the best place to be- thanks for your answer though

First you must understand the purpose of the flap. It is a sensory need a person has to "ground" themselves or find themselves in space. It helps reduce anxiety and is soothing for many on the autistic spectrum.
Most people do or did at one time flap and have since learned to fulfill this need in more socially acceptable ways. For instance, have you ever known someone who constantly shook their leg, tapped their fingers, played with their hair, chewed on a pencil, rocked back and forth, smacked their gum - the list goes on and on. They are fulfilling this need but to the observer, they just appear nervous.
Many autistics aren't too keen on social rules and propriety so to satisfy this need to ground themselves when faced with an overstimulating circumstance, they do what comes most naturally and really is the most satisfying, by flapping.
I've had this explained to me by many people on the spectrum and it makes sense to me. It's just hard to put into words. I hope I didn't make it too confusing.

I have a seven yr old grandson who is autistic and he does that when excited. Would not a different section be better to discuss this?

No I don't, I do tend to speak faster when I'm really excited though and know others who do it too.
