Because they are ignorant about Apollo, space, and physics, and because they are deluded enough to think that they can draw defensible conclusions from a seriously limited study of the material. Some are predisposed to disbelieve anything the US government tells them. I have had long circular debates with people on the subject. They all share the same inability to argue reasonably and to provide evidence that backs up their position. They'll even invent whole scenraios to bolster their views in order to avoid haviong to consider the possibility they are wrong. They will state things 'don't make sense', as one respondent here has, but won't consider that the reason it doesn't make sense to them is because their expectations or understanding might just be in error. You think the waving flag makes no sense? Look at it! It has a rod sewn across the top edge to hold it out precisely because it WON'T wave in a vacuum. It would look a bit crap if the astronauts just put up a normal flag and let it hang down the blasted pole! Watch the video. It only waves when an astronaut MOVES the pole! The rest of the time it was completely static, which is impossible in anything BUT a vacuum.

People who believe Apollo 11 was staged fall into three categories.

1: Those who have been fooled by the people who fall into category 2. These people often can be brought back to reality with reasoned arguments like actually showing them the full story.

2: Thse who do it to make a buck or embarass the US. These people quite often don't believe what they write, but ust do it to make a quick buck off the gullible. Some of them blatantly LIE about it by being very selective about what they show.

3: People who are genuinely convinced it was a hoax and have to invent incredible scenarios to bolster this view as if their very wellbeing depended on them not being proved wrong about anything. I have encountered such people. They are scary.

It is pretty amazing that people have walked on the moon, and nobody has been back there in more than 35 years - so it should not be a surprise that some people find it hard to believe - particularly if they are not old enough to remember the moon landings.

There were a total of 6 moon landings. By the time of the last one in December of 1972, much of public was no longer amazed- they were bored with the whole thing -

Let's see, Nixon was President during all six Apollo landings on the Moon. He was unable to keep secret a single third rate burglary pulled off by six employees of the Committee to Re-elect the President, ultimately being the only President ever driven from office for this. But Apollo employed 400,000 people, and he was able to pull off six hoax landings on the Moon without a single one of them leaking it. What do you think?

Those who want to tarnish United States must have cooked this story up. Through media ,even before 1969 and after 1969 I had been very keen in reading all the day to day developments. Unless and until it is proved that it is a staged one I will be sticking to my belief.

Flat earth people, yes, but they couldn't wield the kind of influence it takes to get so many people to believe that nonsense. That takes a movie. Capricorn One. So what was science fiction and a semi-serious docudrama by conspiracy buffs, became a religion for many.
Then there were books and articles and documentaries on television, (the same networks that have aired every kind of documentary from ghosts to aliens), and reference to it in a couple more movies. For some that constitutes absolute certainty. Just as long as it goes against what most people think and has the excitement of a conspiracy that allows them to squeal about the lies of the US government.
The flag waving never happened except when it was handled. You would think that one of the primary "proofs" at least gives some appearance of being true, but no one has ever been able to show me a video of the flag waving. And the still shots of it show the same wrinkles in the same places. The reason it sticks out is because it is held up by a horizontal rod, as any fool should be able to see.
We did it. It was a remarkable achievement. And it's a shame so many people believe this nonsense.

Some possible answers:

1. We haven't been to the moon in so long that now it seems like science fiction
2. People love a conspiracy theory
3. A movie was made suggesting this idea - OJ starred in it
4. It seems incredible to 'go to the moon' and back

Just some plausible reasons...

Because they are not bright enough to realize it could not have been faked. The only way to pull it off would have been to find a way for man to transmit radio signals from the moon for several hours without a break even though the command module kept going behind the moon, and out of radio contact.

Where did the moon rocks come from? Pieces of the rocks were sent around the country to different schools etc. to be studied. There was a movie made about this, it was all done in a hollywood studio etc. I guess some people believe this wild stuff.

The Flat Earth Society started it to put down photos of a round earth. Some people like going against accepted thought to annoy people and some are just sheep who believe anything.

A good reason could be that it's impossible for making the landing on the moon. That it is impossible to make such a journey. You know how critics are.
