When can you start putting stuff (blankets, toys, etc) into a crib with a sleeping baby? Is it a certain age or a developmental goal?

Basically never. When they are very small they can be suffocated by such items. And when the risk of suffocation goes down they are about to learn to stand/pullup and they can use such items as "steps" to climb out of the crib. So, until he/she is in a toddler bed just keep all blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, etc out of the crib.

Umm for as long as they are termed 'baby' or 'toddler', its a bad idea. My 8 month old daughter likes to sleep with her stuffed eeyore, but we go in and pull it out after she falls asleep. They say the SIDS risk is done at 5 months, but what if your baby gets wrapped in the blanket? Their coordination isnt good enough until they are around 3. These things are usually only a distraction from sleep anyways.

I prefer my little guy to sleep in a "sleep sack" on cool nights....it gives me piece of mind that he is not tangled up in his blankets, but I do give him a really small fuzzy breathable blanket that he loves to cuddle up with next to his face....he cant sleep without it.
As far as toys, he is 9 months old now and I still keep toys out of the crib while sleeping. ....he has a couple of toys that are attached to the crib that I do not worry about (mirror, mobile, and ocean wonders) and one small teddy bear.
Babies do not need toys while sleeping...(just my opinion) it only takes a couple of seconds to remove them at night night time.

You really should never put toys or blankets in there.
The crib is for sleeping. If you put toyes in there, he/she might associate it with playing and not sleep good anymore.
Blankets - I usually didn't put them in there at all.
Dress them warm enough and they'll be fine. If I do put a blanket in with my daughter, I give her a clean small burp cloth. Sometimes she just wants a little something to rub, that works for her!

my sister did it as early as when they came home from the hospital! Make sure nothing is blocking Baby's air way and you should be set!
