I think equal, I would only say hurricane because you are defenitley being hit if it's coming your way. With tornadoes, they go up and down, so you may have a chance of not getting badly hit.

I like to compare the difference between a tornado and a hurricane as the difference between terror and horror.

Tornadoes are terrifying. They strike suddenly and with little or no warning.

But they are short-lived and their damage path is on average a mile wide. (Although an F5 can be 2 miles wide.)

Hurricanes are horrifying. You often get 24 to 36 hours notice. And that plays on your mind a lot differently.

Hurricanes are huge. Squally rain bands often arrive 24 hours ahead of the storm. The winds build gradually at first, but then more rapidly.

Both tornadoes and hurricanes have howling winds. But in hurricanes, the winds can howl for hours. And it is a non-stop screeching in your ears. And a hurricane's winds can stretch out 60 - 120 miles from the eye. So the damage field is much larger.

But the winds are nothing compared to a hurricane's storm surge. A Storm Surge is a sudden rising of water that happens as a hurricane's eye gets close to shore. These fast rising flood waters kill more people than a hurricane's winds.

So overall, I have to say I'd get more nervous at an approaching hurricane than a tornado.

A tornado because you can get enough warning from a Hurricane to leave the area, a tornado can strike anytime like 3 in the morning when you are sleeping, you get little time in advance to know its coming, maybe a half hour at the most

Well, I have been through both. Way more hurricanes than tornadoes. both can be really scary.

But tornadoes come with very little warning and are a lot more unpredictable.

So I would have to say tornadoes make me more nervous.

depends on point of view.
If I was standing in the open and about to personally to be hit by a tornado, then that's worse than a hurricane.
But if I was thinking of buying land on the gulf coast in say east texas or louisianna where there was a chance of tornados and/ or a chance of hurricanes, the hurricanes are a lot more likely to have an inpact on my property. the area hurricane effects is so much larger than a tornado's.

A hurricane becuase I can easily avoid a tornado by using the doppler radar and looking for storm features indicative of one. Also, a tornado is smaller and therefore less likely to hit my house than a large hurricane even though a tornado can do worse damage.

A hurricane. Tornados are relatively small and easy to avoid, even though their wind speeds are quite high. Hurricanes are huge and cause a lot of damage over a very wide area, whereas tornado damage is much more localized.

Probably a tornado since they come up quickly. There's a little amount of time to get ready compared to a hurricane which can give you a 24 hour notice.

Tornadoes just pop out of nowhere, at least with hurricanes you get some notice.
