How do I keep my hoodie in great shape?

I just bought a really nice hoodie and I want to make sure it lasts. How do I keep it soft and not all pilly on the inside? Should I wash it right now or wear it a few times first? What settings should I wash on? Or dry on?

Angie's advice above is great, but I add one other hint to it. When you wash your hoodie, use 1/2-1 cup of vinegar in the rinse water, depending on the load size. This will set the color, soften the fibers and keep it looking new without fading color. One other thing, avoid washing it with garments that are abrasive, like jeans. If you wash it along with garments that are of the same weight, you can prevent the fuzzy inside from pilling.

Don't wash your hoodie until it's absolutely necessary. Then turn it inside out & wash it in cold water & use a liquid fabric softener to keep it smelling nice & soft also. When the hoodie is washed, do not dry it in the dryer. Lay it flat on a towel somewhere & let it dry. For a quick touch up, to remove wrinkles, put it in the dryer (permanent press), on the lowest setting for about ten minutes. Then hang it on a plastic hanger.

Avoid washing your hoodie too often. Wash once every 3 wearings or so. Put the hoodie in a pillowcase, and secure the pillowcase so that the hoodie doesn't fall out. Wash the hoodie (by itself) in cold water, delicate cycle, with Woolite. Lay it out on a smooth surface to dry, adjusting the hoodie so that it's in perfect shape.

What i do in that case is i wash my hoodies inside out. This technique is also good for tanks or stylish shirts with beading, or elegant designs, etc. I wash on warm/cold settings, and throw them in the dryer on medium heat and add a fabric softner sheet to it.The outside won't fade out by flipping the hoodie inside out. If you prefer you can also after you wash it hang it on a hanger and hook it on the top of your shower and let it air dry. That way it won't shrink or fade. And i don't think it'll matter whether you wash it or wear it first..but if you wear it first maybe throw it in the dryer for about 15 minutes with a dryer sheet to get that "new clothes" smell out. :0)

I wouldn't was it at all but take it to the cleaners. I do that with almost all of my sweaters.
