You don't need to loose anything. Just backup all of your data, music, picture and documents etc to another hard drive (internal hard drive or external USB drive) or a CDR or DVD-R.

Then use the "restore" or WinXP disks that came with your computer. Update windows first with Service Pack 2 and then re-install your programs and copy your data back to your "my documents" folder - your computer will be like new.

I used to do this about once per year, but then I bought a program "Drive Image" (similar to Norton Ghost) which will make an exact image of your drive. I saved that after a re-install and now anytime I want to restore to that exact operation it takes only about 10 minutes and no effort. You just need another drive to store your backup - you should be backing up your data somewhere anyways so you probably already have this.

Good Luck

Yes I did this a while ago and there are real disdvantages.

I finished up with a computer with such old fashioned windows that it wouldn't download Norton immediately.

I spent at least a day doing nothing but get updates.

It's much slower than when it was bought, even though it's been reinstalled - even with service package 2.

I think once a computer's 2-3 years old, it is going to be slow unless you buy the latest version of everything and that may not suit the machine.

Good luck - don't expect miracles.

System Restore: Go to: "Start" "All Programs" "Accessories" "System Tools" "System Restore" "Then: "Restore my Computer to an prior time" "Next" "Select a Restore Point" Follow Instructions from there. Note: You too can set a Restore Point of your possess determining. Keep stepping again till you get what you wish. You too can pass ahead when you return too a ways. You would possibly not lose any records. Try this earlier than you pass to System Recovery. Make a duplicate of this as you can also make a mistake the primary time.
