Hello!! :o) Do I have a right NOT to celebrate MY birthday? Do I have a right to request that nobody GIVES me anything in recognition of that day? I like to be alone on MY 'special day' and find it extremely frustrating that those in my life - year after year - guilt trip me info allowing them to buy me something. I don't want my birthday recognized. I don't want any gifts or cards or anything at all. I want my birthday to be completely ignored. THAT is want I WANT. Is that - or is that not - my right?! Thanks. Have a great day!! Craig!! :o)

It's your right. There are other cultures that never celebrate birthdays. You just need to stand up for yourself and not give in to the guilt tripping that those around you give you when that time of the year comes. Politely turn down gifts, and inform them of your decision.

Of course you have the "right" not to celebrate your birthday, Craig, but it's much more difficult to convince friends and family of your sincerity. Many people look forward to anyone's birthday in order to celebrate. Maybe, you could turn things around and celebrate your mother on your birthday for bringing you into the world. If you beat everyone to the punch, you might be able to convince your friends and family to buy gifts for her instead of you. Just let everyone know you're starting a new tradition. Either that or just leave town.

There comes an age when people should stop expecting their birthdays to be celebrated. That age is 11.

You have a perfect right to not celebrate your birthday. My husband and I feel exactly as you do. We do not "celebrate" birthdays by giving cards, gifts, or "special" occasion dinners, and we request our friends and family to refrain from mentioning it to us. They pressure us anyway, and try to make us feel guilty for not celebrating OUR birthday with them.

We finally stopped calling them on their birthday, and as a retribution, they stopped calling us on ours, which is what we wanted in the first place.

Absolutely!!!
Tell them that firmly, don't show up for the parties, be unavailable that day and do your own thing, and donate the presents to charity and send them the tax receipt. Guilt is a useless feeling.Send the cards back as not at this address. One year of that they will get the point. It is harsh, but it works.

I done that, but by doing so i ended up feeling sorry for myself which made me feel stupid. It seems inevitable. The only way your going to have your way is completely isolate yourself or spend the day at the beach away from everyone you know, turn off your cell phone, or anywhere else you dont know anyone.

So why are you telling everyone here that it is your birthday? Happy Birthday anyway. Today is my daughters b-day too. She is five and won't refuse to celebrate.

You have the right not to want it, however your family has the right to try and celebrate it with you...although I don't see why they would want to you seem really grumpy.... Good luck, cheer up, and Happy Birthday!

I think it's cool. Just take off and go someplace for the day or weekend, alone. turn off your cell phone and don't answer calls. if you make yourself available on that day then they will keep pushing you...if they seriously wanna give you something they can give you money for your trip.
