"Won't let you play" covers a lot of area.

What did you see exactly? An error message? What did it say?

And why don't you call EA for help? They made it after all.

Tell all of the tech specs, and I'll come back to you. I want you to find out the current specs of these things on your computer.:
- RAM
- VRAM (sometimes known as a graphics card/chip or a GPU)
- Processor type and speed (example: Intel Pentium 4 with 3 GHZ or AMD Athlon 3000+ with 2.5 GhZ)
- Hard drive space
- What your current disc drive is. The Sims 2 won't run since it's a DVD, so if you don't have the proper drive included/installed on your PC, get a DVD±RW/CD±RW drive
- The OS you're using (Vista probably won't play it, so check if there's a patch for the Sims 2 that lets you play The Sims 2 on your Vista PC)

If all else fails, try these methods to make The Sims 2 to work on your PC:
- Try doing a sweep with your availible anti spy/anti virus software. There might be infections clogging up your hard drive, which probably won't let you run The Sims 2 on your PC
- Take it into a PC specialist (Geek Squad, your handy-dandy ISP guy, etc.) and get your computer repaired

Good luck! I'll make sure I'll update this answer once you update your question.

In order for The Sims 2 to work on your computer, your computer needs to meet certain system requirements.

If you have a T&L (info about what T&L is below) capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM (such as nvidia GeForce 2 or better or ATI Radeon 7000 or better) then you need at least:

* 800 MHz processor
* 256 MB RAM if Windows XP
* 128 MB RAM if Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000
* At least 3.5 gigs of free hard drive space

If you have a non-T&L capable video card (such as TNT2, Intel, or Rage for example) then you need at least:

* 2.0 GHz processor
* 256 MB RAM if Windows XP
* 128 MB RAM if Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000
* At least 3.5 gigs of free hard drive space
