Why does our society place the blame and responsibility for all of the criminal acts in the US on Hip-Hop or Rap music and not on the listener? No one forces these people to do the things they do. Music does not MAKE anyone do anything. Nor does it influence. The listener makes the CHOICE to go do what they did based on their OWN lives and not on those performing the songs. Why is it the parents of today do not want to take the responsibility of their children and their actions? It is the parent's responsibility to ENSURE their children have the common sence to determine the difference between right and wrong. Not lay blame on someTHING that has no soul.

Common sence. Influence is only allowed when the listener allows it. For those that are young, their PARENTS are not stepping up to the plate. Hearing someone say they went out and killed their mom does not make me want to do the same, even if I am mad as he** at her. People do what they want to do because they want to, not because the music said to. This does not just apply to Hip-Hop and Rap. ANY genre of music that promotes life as it is to them catches attention.

As for the commercials, do you buy a product because you liked the jingle you heard? Or do you remember the product because of the jingle you heard? There is a difference. The jingle is to catch your attention and make you remember. You have the choice to go buy.

Your basic premise that people make their own decisions is correct, BUT music, and other outside forces DO influence people- especially young teens. If rap and hip hop glamourizes certain behavior- even if it's only trash talk, then..... they need to be held accountable since they are the first line of defense, since the kids copy them. First the donkey, then the cart- get it?

I agree, my daughter listens to hip-hop/rap my husband to heavy metal, and neither of them even when they have been angry went out and killed anyone or smashed in windows. Fact is people need someone to blame other then themselves, and so what easier thing to blame then music and video games. I admit that violence on tv may have played a role in soceity getting worse, but at the same time where were the parents and why were they not construing to the child how bad that behavior was on tv. People need to just be held liable for their own actions!

I agree with most of what you say but if music has no influence on people why do they use it in commercials to influence people to buy a product?

Everyone blames it on something. School, music, TV, these people need to wake up and take responsibility for their children and lead by example not excuse.

Wrong. All forms of mass media influence the mindset of people.Yes,individuals should be accountable for their actions, but anything absorbed into the mind will have some type of influence one way or another.

When a news story about some senseless act of violence comes on, people want to believe that there was something that could have been done to prevent it, so they want to censor movies, or music or video games so they can feel like they did something about it. It's easier to censor than to help people out of poverty or to prevent child abuse.
