My friend had a Athlon 64 computer that he upgraded to a dual core CPU (he went from 2.0 single to 2.2GHz dual core) and he has told me that he is very happy with his performance. He says that he used to have problems doing some tasks while a DVD was burning in another window and that is perfect now. He says that his computer is faster, but more importantly, it is more responsive - that is the advantage of dual core.

I also have an "older" Athlon 64 computer (socket 939) that had a A64 3200+ 2.0GHz CPU and I upgraded to a faster single core because I don't do alot of multi-tasking and the video encoder I use can only support a single core. I went to the Athlon64 fx57 2.8GHz CPU and it really is fast - I cut my video encoding times in half.

If you are thinking of a whole new computer, you might want to go Intel Core2, but I just wanted a $150 upgrade because I already had 2GB of very fast RAM.

I think your incremental upgrade won't cost that much, you could sell your old CPU on eBay, and extend the life of your current computer several years and make it worth more when you finally do sell it.

Good Luck

Performance wise check out tomshardware.com I would strongly suggest using a Core 2 Duo chip though. I sell computers and loading all the programs are much quicker with Core 2 Duo chips than with the 2ghz dual core. I use the E6600 its awesome
