I know that in Hoodoo brick dust is supposed to be poured at doorways to keep people out who intend to do you harm, but how exactly does it work?

Why arent the people who intend to do you harm allowed to cross it? And what happens to them if they do? And how do they know not to cross the threshold if they arent aware the the brick dust is there?

does anyone have any extensive info on this practice?

Sorry kiddo, but brick dust isnt just in a movie. It's a real practice with real roots. I am writing a book about Marie Laveau. And i'm adding this element to it. But it's important that i know exactly WHY people meaning you harm are not allowed to cross the threshold if there is brick dust or graveyard dirt placed there. What happens to them if they do?

It operates on the principle of sympathy.

I think it may have something to do with a connection to the dead. If you are familiar with Voodoo culture around Marie Laveaux, you may know that many of the tombs in the Lousiana area are composed of red brick. The red brick contains the corpse within the tomb. Perhaps it's kind of like the same principle...just using the dust.
Many of the locals also believe that if you draw crosses on her tomb with a red brick, that her spirit will grant you a wish. Could be related somehow...dont know. Hope you find something useful from this.cheers.

I found a great reference in a hodoo website. I think you should read it for yourself. It would be hard to summerize. Also as a witch I have found that occoltopedia.com is also a great reference. Good luck on your journey.
