while commonly thought to be Steamboat Willie, THAT was just the first sound cartoon. Plane Crazy was Mickey's first cartoon, celebrating Lindberg's flight

Plane Crazy was, as one responder mentioned, the first produced (albeit silent) and was given one showing on May 15, 1928 (having failed to find a distributor). The first one in wider release was Steamboat Willie (November 18, 1928), which benefited from sound (this was new technology at the time, and helped Mickey find a distributor). After Steamboat Willie's success, Plane Crazy and The Gallopin' Gaucho were given soundtracks and put in wider release.

It was titled "Steamboat Willy" and it starred Mickey Mouse and another character, playing way back in the late 1920's
