Ugh, well, everyone beat me too it, but I shall reiterate. GO SEE SPRING AWAKENING!!!!!! It looks positively amazing. I wish I was going to New York :( Anyway, if you're a complete novice to Broadway shows, I would suggest seeing the classics - Les Miserables, and Rent. Skip out on Phantom, despite what everyone says, its actually quite a bore. If you're looking for something funny and upbeat, I would suggest Hairspray or The Drowsy Chaperone. If you want to see what everyone's been talking about for the last 3 or so years, go see Wicked, its all the rage (and quite good too). I hope you have an amazing time!!! I'm jealous! Oh! and if you want to meet the stars afterward, stick around the theatre and find the backstage exit. They wil usually sign autographs back there while they leave!

I almost forgot! For shows that have been running for a while, go to the TKTS booth in Times Square to buy the tickets the day of the show, and you'll get a great discount. I don't suggest this method for new shows, as they may be sold out. Get Spring Awakening tickets early. ok that's all :)

The Jersey Boys is the most incredible show I ever saw. It won the 2006 Tony. The tickets are expensive and worth every penny of it. We are probably going back from Houston just to see it again. I have never been to a musical event in which the audience gave standing ovations during the performance. It is that good.

I say whatever appeals to you, but don't miss Spring Awakening! Get tickets now though. The shows are likely to be sold out the closer you get to your trip.

Rent
Mary Poppins
The Drowsy Chaperone
Jersey Boys
