I remember it came in a small-ish tub with a plastic screw-on lid, it was very thick, almost like jelly, (Jello for all you Americans out there reading this), but it wasn't even wobbly,.. it was green as well if I remember correctly, sometimes purple. Any ideas what it was called?

Its all about the abrasion I think, using something like sand or salt or even sugar for something for the oil and grease to attach itself to. Used to work on the roads in Oz and had to work with generators and grinders, so alot of tinkering with the motors. The aussie guys used to rub dry dirt over their hands to remove the grime and stickiness of the oil and grease. Then at home used petroleum jelly to counteract the stains on the hand. If needs be, soak the hands for ten minutes in the sink full of water with a capful or two of shampoo and then use an abrasive cloth or sponge. The more abrasive the better if ye can stand the scrubbing. When all is done, I hate to say it but moisturise. Moisturiser helps prevent further greivances. I learned the hard way. Hope this helps!

Simple Green is the green kind. I don't remember what the purple stuff is called. There is also gojo--a lemon version from another company.

It comes in many colours but the most common named brand is called 'Swarfega'. A cheaper alternative to this is washing powder and washing up liquid. The granules in the powder act as a scrub.

Swarfega. The original one is green and smells kinda gross, but now they make an orange one too. Works just as well and smells a hell of a lot nicer! And it moisturises too :D

It is swarfega, and one of the best on the market. As you stated it is green, and can still be obtained. It has a hint of grit in it,which is for getting right into the skin.

Swarfega. Great stuff. Apparently there's something in it that can get you addicted to it if you eat enough of it. But you'd probably die before that happened.
