Recently bought a new lawnmower. Because of a wrist problem and inability to get anyone to take it out of the car it was left in the car's back seat, on its side because that was how it fit, for several days.

My son finally decided to get ambitious today. He came in and said the mower is covered in oil. Before we go any farther with this -- do we have a problem, Houston?

Turns out it was just a small amount of oil, enough to make part of the mower, well, oily. There was a small amount of oil on the box, none leaked through. And with the position it was in I don't think it got in the engine. Thanks for the answers! It has been raining ever since so we haven't had a chance to gas it up and try it out yet.

Probably not. When it was tipped on it's side the oil from the engine ran out. Clean it up, check the air filter for oil, if is is paper and has oil on it, replace it. Remove the spark plug and give a few pulls. Make sure to replace the oil in the engine to the full mark. It should be fine, may smoke for a couple of minutes. The oil on the car seat is going to be the bigger problem.

You don't have a problem at all. Just clean up all the oil with some old rags and make sure you replace the oil in the engine before you start it up. If you start it up with little to no oil, you may burn the engine up. Make sure you get the right type of oil also. It should say in the manual what type of oil it takes and how full to fill it.

Yes, you have a nasty mower. Ok, call the store that sold it to you and tell them what you told us. They probably have a guarantee that will cover this. If not, then have sonny clean it up, and for pity sake, read the owners manual about how to add fluids that were lost.

Problem? Other than oil on your car's interior -- doubt it.
Just refill the mower's oil.

just check and refill the oil as needed. nothing should be harmed by that. it may smoke really bad when you first start it but it will eventually all burn off and will run fine after that.
