Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciproal:

12 / (1/4) = 12 * (4/1) = 48

To add (or subtract) fractions, you must first convert them to the same denominator (in this case multiply 1/4 by 2/2 to convert it to 2/8), then add (or subtract) the numerators:

1/4 - 1/8 = 2/8 - 1/8 = (2-1)/8 = 1/8

5 5/8 - 4 1/4 = 5 5/8 - 4 2/8 = (5-4) + (5/8 - 2/8) = 1 + (5-2)/8 = 1 3/8

1/2 + 1/4 = 2/4 + 1/4 = (2+1)/4 = 3/4

1 7/8 + 4 1/4 = 1 7/8 + 4 2/8 = (4 + 1) + (7/8) + 2/8) = 5 + (7+2)/8 = 5 + 9/8 = 5 + 1 1/8 = 6 1/8
